Mercedes-Benz launched the locally-assembled new generation E-class model in Indonesia this week, following the debut of CBU versions of the model last August.
Production of the E-class, now in its fifth-generation, from CKD kits resumed at the company’s Wanaherang plant near Bogor, some 60km (35 miles) south of Jakarta, after it was discontinued for the new model changeover.

The locally-assembled models are the E250 Avantguard and E300, produced alongside the S-Class and the GL SUV range.
Mercedes-Benz Distribution Indonesia (MDI) president Roelof Lamberts said local production of these models will help lift sales as they will incur lower taxes. He said the E-class line accounted for around 25% of 3,371 local deliveries last year but this is expected to rise to one-third this year.
Lamberts added the company is considering further expanding the range of locally-assembled models to help drive up sales volumes and capacity utilisation at its 6,000 units/year plant. It is looking at adding the A-class and B-class models to the local line-up in the near future.
