Maruti Suzuki India has announced a price increase ranging from INR1,500 (US$22) to INR 8,014 ($118) for various models from the Alto 800 hatchback to the (premium in India) S-Cross.
"[These] new prices are [effective] from 27th January 2017. The hike in car prices is because of increase in commodity, transportation and administrative costs," Maruti said in a three-line statement on its website.
The Economic Times of India (ETI) reported the automaker, in August last year, raised prices for Vitara Brezza compact SUV by INR20,000 ($293) and the Baleno hatchback by INR10,000 ($147). Other price rises ranged between INR,500 and INR5,000.
Also last year, Hyundai Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Nissan, Toyota, Renault, Mercedes-Benz India and Tata Motors all announced price rises to take effect this month (January 2017), citing rises in input costs and adverse foreign exchange effects, ETI added.
Ahead of the latest Maruti announcement, Suzuki Motor said construction and fitting out of its new Indian vehicle manufacturing had been completed and production was scheduled to start on 1 February. The plant is owned and operated separately by Suzuki Motor, separate from the long standing Marutu Suzuki joint venture manufacturing and sales operations, but will supply all its vehicles to Maruti.
