Volkswagen Group Malaysia plans to start exporting vehicles it produces from completely knocked down (CKD) kits to neighbouring countries, Bernama.com.my reported.

The company intends to start with Indonesia and Thailand as both countries, like Malyasia, are right hand drive and there has been a surge in demand in those markets.

Armin Keller, Volkswagen Group Malaysia MD, said: “We are looking at our Jetta, Polo and Polo sedan as the potential export models. We are technically ready and now considering the right pricing for the market.”

In future, the company plans to begin exports to other ASEAN countries such as Vietnam and Philippines but these are left hand drive markets for which specific production would have to be set up and LHD-specific parts sourced both from overseas (some KD kits come from VW’s manufacturing plant in India) and locally.

“However, if the volume (for left-hand drive countries) is right and the additional (production) cost is not as much, we may look into producing the models here,” Keller said.
