New vehicle sales in Malaysia increased by 6.9% to 64,660 units in December from 60,495 units sold in the month last year, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).
The association said full year sales increased by 1.6% to 666,465 units in 2014, from 655,795 in the previous year, supported by strong economic growth, a stable employment market and aggressive marketing by car companies.
New models such as such as the Perodua Axia and Proton Iriz helped drive sales in the final months of the year.
Passenger vehicle sales grew by 2% to 588,341 units last year, from 576,657 units previously, while commercial vehicles sales fell by 1.3% to 78,124 units, from 79,136 units.
The MAA expects sales to rise by 2% to 680,000 units in 2015, but is concerned about the scheduled introduction of the new goods and sales tax (GST) in April, currency depreciation and inflation.
