Malaysia’s new vehicle market continued to grow in November 2019, by 8.9% to 52,584 units from 48,282 units in the same month of last year, according to registration data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).
The market looks to have normalised after declining sharply in the June to August period compared with strong year earlier data when sales were lifted by a three month sales tax holiday introduced at the beginning of June 2018.
Sales of passenger vehicles increased by 10.1% year on year to 47,754 units last month while commercial vehicles sales were 1.8% lower at 4,830 units.
Total vehicle sales in the first 11 months of the year were slightly higher at 549,445 units compared with 550,410 units a year earlier, including 500,861 passenger vehicles and 48,584 commercial vehicles.
Total vehicle production in the country increased by 1.1% to 528,333 units year-to-date from 522,571 units in the same period of last year.
Proton said its sales, including exports, doubled to 9,643 units in November from a year earlier, reflecting strong demand for its Geely based X70 SUV launched at the end of last year and the recent launch of the new Saga small car.
