Vehicle sales in Malaysia rose by 4.4% year-on-year to 50,936 units in April, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). Compared with record volumes of 63,265 units in March, the market declined 19.5%, as the industry struggled with shortages of parts from Japan in the wake of the devastating earthquake in March.
Vehicle production fell by 24.7% to 37,419 units last month, from 49,666 units a year earlier, which points to further market declines in the coming months, despite the currently buoyant consumer sentiment. The industry expects output to be disrupted at least until the third quarter of the year.
Sales in the first four months of the year increased by 6.6% 209,368 units, compared with 196,227 units a year earlier.
