Proton has announced a recall for its new Proton Savvy over a faulty bearing. The recall affects some 34,000 Savvy cars.

Proton said a regular random check had found the possibility of water entry into the rear wheel bearing, which could lead to a malfunction of the affected components.

Proton’s managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said the recall was purely a precautionary measure as the convenience and safety of its customers was its highest priority.

“The safety and satisfaction of our customers is a primary concern. As a precautionary measure, we are recalling all Savvy’s for inspection and repair. We do apologise to all the Savvy owners for any inconvenience,” he said.

It said the recall would affect a total of 34,000 Savvys and it would conduct the necessary checks and replacements at no cost to the customers.

One analyst quoted in The Edge newspaper said the Savvy development might dent Proton’s efforts to re-build its own reputation and consumer confidence, adding that the public might fear still unresolved quality issues that the company had had to grapple with so long.

“Quality has always been an issue with Proton and we are not surprised. But at least Proton has come clean and recalled the cars, and that might win some respect for the company,” she said.
