DRB-Hicom is in talks with Fiat to take over the Malaysian distribution rights for the Alfa Romeo brand from local firm Sime Darby.
Sime Darby announced last week, after eight years, that it no longer wants to distribute Alfa Romeo cars in Malaysia.
DRB-Hicom is Malaysia’s leading automotive company – it is Proton’s largest shareholder and assembles and distributes Honda, Isuzu, Suzuki and Volkswagen group vehicles.
DRB-Hicom also has extensive automotive component manufacturing operations, which will be important in terms of raising local content in the case of local assembly of Fiat group vehicles.
Fiat group wants to expand its presence in Malaysia and is also considering launching mass market cars such as the 500 and Panda models.
