China's Lynk & Co opened its first showroom in Europe this week, in Amsterdam, as part of a broad based programme of expansion into global markets.

Lynk & Co, owned by Geely Auto which also controls Volvo Cars, has begun presales of its 01 SUV in the Netherlands with deliveries scheduled for early 2021.

In a statement, Lynk & Co said the new outlet in Amsterdam showed it was now in the "fast lane of development" in Europe. The company intends to continue its European expansion with new outlets to be opened in Germany, Sweden, France, Spain, Italy and Belgium in the near future [no sign of RHD for the UK yet – ed].

This followed an announcement by the company in late September of an app-based car-sharing membership programme based on monthly subscriptions, providing an alternative to traditional purchases and leasing. The scheme, similar to Volvo's allows customers to share their cars using a digital key and is part of the company's global sustainable mobility programme.

CEO Alain Visser said "compared with selling more vehicles, we prefer to develop a different business model to the overall automobile industry, which allows a more efficient use of vehicles".

The automaker was established in 2016 and has sold over 360,000 vehicles since its first car was launched late in 2017. In the first nine months of 2020 deliveries rose by almost 19% year on year to 105,937 vehicles.
