LG Energy Solution (LGES) said it had started construction this week of a new wholly owned battery manufacturing complex near Queen Creek in the US state of Arizona, with completion scheduled for 2026.

The project, first announced in 2022, got under way last November with initial land preparation work.

The company said it was investing US$5.5bn in the project which would consist of two separate factories: an EV battery plant and a facility for energy storage systems (ESS).

The EV battery plant would be managed by a newly established company called LG Energy Solution Arizona and produce LGES’ new 46 series batteries designed specifically for EVs.

LGES described the 46-Series battery as a “crucial part” of its “innovative product portfolio” featuring its “advanced” battery technology.

The company said it planned to first mass produce the 46 series battery at its Ochang plant in South Korea in the second half of this year with LG Energy Solution Arizona continuing its global roll out from late 2025.

The ESS battery factory, called LG Energy Solution Arizona ESS, was scheduled for completion in 2026 and would produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pouch type batteries.

LGES said this would be one of the first ESS exclusive battery factories in the world. The complex would have production capacity for 53GWh when fully operational, including 36GWh dedicated to EV batteries and 17GWh to ESS.

LGES said at a stakeholders’ meeting in Queen Creek this week it planned to begin a first round of worker recruitment for both plants by the end of this year.

LGES has another stand alone battery manufacturing plant in Michigan built a decade ago. Its capacity is being expanded from 5GWh to 25GWh.

The company also has US EV battery joint ventures with major automakers including General Motors, Honda, and Hyundai.
