Kia Motors June 2017 domestic and export sales for passenger cars, recreational vehicles and commercial vehicles fell 13.3% year on year in June to a total of 232,370 units.

Domestic market sales fell 10.5% to 47,015 units sold, mainly due to some pulled-forward demand caused by the termination of the temporary reduction in vehicle consumption tax effective at the end of June 2016. Overseas sales decreased by 14%, compared to the previous year, to 185,355 units,  due to a continued sales fall in China.

Kia’s best-selling export model last month was the Sportage compact SUV with 35,586 units sold. The subcompact Rio (Pride in Korea) was the second best seller with 24,048 units sold, followed by the Cerato compact sedan (aka Forte or K3) with 21,477 units sold.

Kia last week unveiled its version of parent Hyundai Motor’s new Kona B-segment SUV, called the Stonic, which it plans to launch in South Korea later this month. Exports begin in this second half with Europe expected to be a key market.

For the domestic market the Stonic will be available with the same 1.6 diesel engine and seven-speed DCT as the Kona while a decision has not yet been made on whether the petrol model will be available. The petrol is expected to be the main seller in overseas markets, however.
