India’s largest utility vehicle maker, Mahindra & Mahindra, has launched a number of its utility vehicles and pick-up trucks in Kenya which it describes as a “strategic market within the African continent”.

Kenya is one of the first countries outside India to get the XUV 500, a crossover SUV, which is proving remarkably popular in India with orders of more than 7,200 before it went on sale. The crossover will also be launched in Australia.

“Our range of utility vehicles and pick-ups have carved a distinct niche for themselves in markets across the world and I’m sure Kenya will be no exception,” said Sanjay Jadhav, M&M’s exports manager for Africa and the Middle East.

The company said that its exports grew by more than 70% in FY12, with over 29,176 units shipped, and it is expecting double digit growth again in FY13.

The company appointed Simba Corporation as the sole dealer for Mahindra vehicles in Kenya and the dealership will trade under the Xylon Motors name.
