Japan’s eight main automakers reported a 2.7% year on year increase in global production to 2.44m vehicles in October, as the industry continued its gradual recovery from plunging global demand earlier in the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was the second consecutive monthly increase after a 1.7% rise in September, helped by rebounding demand in China and in Japan. Overall vehicle sales in Japan jumped by 29% to 406,851 units last month from weak earlier volumes, while the Chinese vehicle market expanded by over 12% to 2.57m units.

The vehicle market in Europe was up slightly higher at 1.13m units last month, while volume in the US was estimated to have been slightly weaker.

Toyota Motor reported a 9% rise in global output to 845,107 units in October, following an almost 12% rise in September, while its Daihatsu small car subsidiary reported a 3.6% decline due mainly to continued weak demand in Indonesia – its largest overseas market.

Suzuki Motor said its global production jumped by over 27% to 304,196 vehicles, helped by a rebound in its largest global market India.

Honda Motor global production increased by 5.7% to 452,740 units, due mainly to rebounding demand in Japan and China, while Mazda Motor sales were 4.5% higher at 127,688 units.
