Toyota has released a special edition of its Alphard high-end minivan line featuring a navigation system that can simultaneously show different content on a single unit depending on the viewing angle, Kyodo News reported.
Toyota developed the navigation system jointly with Fujitsu Ten Ltd., using Sharp ‘s new liquid crystal display that sends the backlight both left and right, making it possible to show different information and visual content on the same screen simultaneously according to whether the display is viewed from the left or the right.
For example, a driver can check a road map on the display while a passenger can watch a television broadcast.
The special Alphard edition, called the AS Limited DUAL AVN Special, with an engine displacement of 2400 cc, is priced from 3,591,000 yen.
Toyota will consider adopting the car navigation system for other models if customers react favourably. Fujitsu Ten plans to sell the car navigation system as a single product, Kyodo News said.
