The Toyota Prius hybrid retained its position as Japan’s best-selling vehicle in November for the sixth consecutive month, according to the country’s automobile dealers association.
Daihatsu’s Mira minivehicle climbed to second place from third a month earlier thanks to brisk sales of the Mira e:S launched in September, which achieves fuel economy of 30 km/litre of petrol. The Honda Fit [Jazz] dropped to third place.
The Prius sold 34,164 units, up 59.6% year on year, as Toyota filled a large backlog of orders accumulated while manufacturing operations were disrupted following the 11 March earthquake and tsunami.
Sales of the Mira reached 20,052 units while those of the Fit fell 1.7% to 16,399.
Five of the 10 best-selling cars were minicars, with Suzuki’s Wagon R and Daihatsu’s Move ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
