Toyota’s compact electric car, due on sale in 2012, will have a range of more than 100km (62 miles) on a full charge and a top speed of about 120kph (75mph), according to a report in the Chunichi newspaper.
Although the company would not comment on the report, it has already stated that the EV will be based on the FT-EV concept vehicle which shares its underpinnings with the iQ urban commuter. The concept was conceived with a range of more than 90km (56 miles) and a top speed of over 100 kph (62mph).
The newspaper did not speculate on a price or sales target for the EV.
Toyota, an established leader in hybrid cars, is increasing the pace of its battery-run vehicle development and earlier this year announced a tie-up with EV maker Tesla.
The Japanese company will unveil its RAV4 electric concept equipped with a Tesla electric powertrain at next week’s Los Angeles motor show. This car is also due to go on sale in the US in 2012.
