Toyota’s Corolla was the best-selling passenger car in Japan’s new vehicle sales in fiscal 2004 that ended in March 2005, retaining the top spot for the past two years, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said on Wednesday, according to Kyodo News.

Although Corolla sales declined 14.5% from the previous year to 163,181 units, other models failed to beat the Corolla which covers a range from sedan to station wagon and minivan, an association official reportedly said.

Honda’s Fit [Jazz] was second with sales of 147,435 units while Nissan Motor’s Cube was third with 114,563 units.

Toyota accounted for six of the 10 bestsellers. Honda and Nissan had two each, the news agency noted.

Kyodo News said Mitsubishi Motors, which has been hard hit by its vehicle defect cover-up scandals, saw no model among the 30 best sellers on a fiscal year basis for the first time since the association began compiling such rankings in fiscal 1998.
