Toyota subsidiary Primearth EV Energy Co. has resumed production at a Miyagi Prefecture factory that had been shut since the March earthquake and tsunami.

Restarting the plant, which makes storage batteries for hybrid vehicles, means that all major Toyota-affiliated factories in the nation’s northeastern Tohoku region are up and running.

One of the three production lines at the Miyagi facility was back online, with the rest expected to return to service next month, Nikkei said.

The automaker intends to make Tohoku its third domestic production base after central Japan and Kyushu.

Primearth, based in Kosai, Shizuoka Prefecture, has been manufacturing nickel metal hydride battery packs at its Miyagi factory for use in Toyota’s gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle models since January last year.
