Toyota has told reporters in Japan that it is in talks with GM to extend their research and development (R&D) co-operation.
Toyota and GM started such collaboration in 1999, initially working on hybrid engines, electric cars and fuel cells.
A tie-up begun in April 2004 to research and develop fuel cell technology is due to expire at the end of March.
The Asahi Shimbun reported that the although the two companies plan to extend their advanced vehicle technology partnership after the current contract expires, fuel cell vehicles will probably be excluded.
