Three of Japan’s five major automakers increased overseas production and exports in April from a year earlier on strong overseas demand, according to data released on Wednesday.

Reuters said Honda marked a 3.6% increase in overseas output to 185,397 units due to increased production in Asia, while Mazda boosted overseas production 21.7% to 28,876 units.

The Toyota Motor group, including Daihatsu and truck maker Hino, reportedly said group overseas production increased 2.1% year on year to 300,236 units, the 52nd straight month of increase.

Exports by the three increased 13.3% to 51,535 units for Honda, 12.7% to 57,736 units for Mazda, and 15.3% to 222,092 units for the Toyota group, Reuters said.

But it noted that Nissan Motor reported a 13.5% decline in overseas production to 142,657 units, and Mitsubishi Motors posted a 28.9% decrease to 40,704 units.

The two also reported declines in exports, with Nissan seeing an 18.2% decrease and Mitsubishi a 19.2% drop.

The automakers, excluding Nissan, also boosted domestic production in the month, Reuters said.

Toyota group’s domestic output increased 8.2% to 414,279 units, and Honda’s increased 5.5% to 103,092 units. Mazda saw a 5.1% increase to 76,534 units, and Mitsubishi saw a 29.2% increase to 56,357 units. Nissan’s domestic production fell 29.6% to 87,518 units.

The five automakers saw their domestic sales plunge due mainly to a reduction in overall demand, the news agency noted.

Sales in Japan, excluding those of minicars, declined 27.0% for Nissan and 3.3% for the Toyota group. They dropped 8.4% for Honda, and 6.8% for Mazda. Mitsubishi saw an 8.1% drop, the Reuters report added.
