Tesla is planning to open eight aftersales centres across Japan within the year, Nikkei reports.

The news agency said that the company currently operates only one service centre, in Yokohama, but will open branches in other major cities in Aichi, Osaka and other prefectures.

The report said the new centres will not be able to conduct government-mandated safety inspections (as the Yokohama centre can), but will be able to perform some body work and routine maintenance on Tesla vehicles.

The report added that Tesla is currently holding test-drive events across Japan.

Though the Model S has been on sale in Japan for around a year, even minor repairs have so far required that customers bring their vehicles to the company’s Yokohama centre.
