Japanese airbag manufacturer Takata Corporation said it was doubling production of replacement airbags in response to the massive safety recall by leading global vehicle manufacturers.

Around 22m vehicles are affected by safety concerns due to faulty airbag inflators in Takata’s airbags which have been known to explode with excessive force causing deaths and injuries.

The company has come under intense pressure over its handling of complaints globally and lawmakers in the US have been calling on the company for some time to take decisive action.

US regulators are currently fining Takata US$14,000 per day for what they say is a lack of cooperation in the safety investigation – charges that Takata has denied.

Takata said it is working with suppliers to double production of airbag replacement kits to 900,000 units per month by September from the current 450,000.
