Sales
of the diminutive Jimny, a subcompact SUV, reached two million world-wide at the
end of February, Suzuki announced yesterday.

The first Jimny was introduced in 1970 with a three-cylinder, two-stroke 500cc
engine. The four-stroke, four cylinder 0.8 litre version arrived in 1977, a
one-litre model in 1982 and the 1.3 litre model in 1984.

Suzuki currently produces 1.3-litre models in eight factories around the world
and sells them in 134 countries.

The Spanish factory accounts for most production outside Japan and the Jimny
is most popular in Europe, where it enjoys high demand as a rental vehicle for
summer resorts, and India.
