Nissan Motor on Tuesday said Japanese market sales of its mainstay March subcompact hit a record 158,000 units in the just-ended business year, according to Reuters.

The strong sales of the March, along with Nissan’s Teana luxury sedan and Altima sedan, are expected to help Nissan register a record profit for a second consecutive year, the news agency added.

According to Reuters, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said last month the company would at least meet its profit targets for the 2002-03 business year ended on March 31 and was well placed to ride out any slide in demand in the year ahead.

Nissan last November forecast a group net profit of $4 billion for the year, a record high, Reuters noted.

The March, which was fully redesigned about a year ago, has also been produced in Britain since 1992 and in most European markets is sold under the name Micra, Reuters said.
