Honda production in the US will continue to run at half pace through the summer because of the shortage of parts from Japan in the wake of the March earthquake and tsunami.

The carmaker said that supply of the redesigned 2012 Honda Civic, launched in April, will be severely restricted with limited availability of certain models due to the Japan-based parts supply shortage.

The planned autumn launch of the redesigned 2012 CR-V sport utility vehicle will also be delayed by at least a month, Honda said, adding that it will also limit the number of Japan-built vehicles for the North American market, including the Fit [Jazz] compact and Insight hybrid, for the remainder of the year.

Honda said that about 61,000 units had been cut since the disaster up to the end of April.

Nearly two months after the massive earthquake in Japan, the global auto industry is still struggling to obtain key auto supplies ranging from transmissions to paint. Certain colours of vehicles remain in short supply due to a shortage of the Xirallic paint pigment.

Honda is looking for a suitable replacement for such paints or to reconfigure its model line with alternative exterior paints, the company said.
