The Toyota Prius hybrid was Japan’s best-selling car in the first six months of this year with sales of 170,426 according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

Prius sales were up more than threefold from a year earlier due to government subsidies and tax breaks for purchasing fuel-efficient vehicles. Suzuki’s Wagon R minicar came in second with sales of 106,017 units, down 5% from a year earlier, followed by Daihatsu Motor’s Tanto minicar with sales of 104,530, up 30%.

The Prius also took the top spot in the sales ranking for the 13th consecutive month in June, selling 31,876 units. The Tanto took the second spot with sales of 16,871 units and Honda’s Fit compact car ranked third with 15,955 sales.
