Nissan Motor reportedly suspended production at a car assembly plant in Canton, Mississippi, as Hurricane Katrina ripped through the southern US state, but said on Tuesday that lost output would be made up later.

According to Reuters, Nissan halted production at 11:30am local time on Monday, with initial plans to resume on Tuesday morning.
A spokeswoman in Tokyo told the news agency, however, that production would be suspended for an additional shift on Tuesday morning, bringing total lost production to 1,700 vehicles.
“A decision will be made later regarding the afternoon and night shifts,” she told Reuters, adding that the company expected no impact on sales from the lost production.
The report said the Canton plant, which is currently working three shifts, primarily produces large vehicles such as the Titan pickup truck, Armada SUV and Infiniti QX56 luxury SUV, as well as the Altima sedan and Quest minivan.
