According to Reuters, Nissan halted production at 11:30am local time on Monday, with initial plans to resume on Tuesday morning.

A spokeswoman in Tokyo told the news agency, however, that production would be suspended for an additional shift on Tuesday morning, bringing total lost production to 1,700 vehicles.

“A decision will be made later regarding the afternoon and night shifts,” she told Reuters, adding that the company expected no impact on sales from the lost production.

The report said the Canton plant, which is currently working three shifts, primarily produces large vehicles such as the Titan pickup truck, Armada SUV and Infiniti QX56 luxury SUV, as well as the Altima sedan and Quest minivan.

The hurricane weakened after hitting the US Gulf Coast and was downgraded to a tropical storm, Reuters noted.

Nissan rivals Toyota and Honda, which both have factories in Alabama, reportedly said their production was unaffected.

Nissan told Reuters it was leasing 50 vehicles made at the Canton plant to a local emergency agency for $US1 (£0.56) to help with relief efforts.
