Nissan has announced that sales of its continuously variable transmission (CVT) topped a million units in 2007, in-line with targets set under its 2010 environmental plan.
In fact the automaker sold 1,088,000 of the vehicles in fiscal 2007 (ending March 2008).
The 1m target was announced under the Nissan Green Programme 2010 in December 2006. Sales quadrupled from 250,000 units in FY2004 to 1m units in FY2007. Currently, CVT represents approximately 28.6% of global sales, compared to 7% in FY2004. CVT penetration varies across the regions, with the highest rate in North America and Japan at 47.4% and 43.8% respectively.
Nissan estimates that the environmental effect of 1m CVT-equipped vehicle sales is a CO2 reduction equivalent to increasing hybrid vehicles sales by 200,000 units.
