Nissan Motor plans to increase annual sales of compact commercial vehicles by nearly 100% to 2m units by fiscal 2016.

The automaker defines this category as vans, taxicabs, pickup and small trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles weighing from 0.5 ton to 7.5 tons. Nissan sold 1.1m in fiscal 2011, compared with Toyota’s sales of 2.84m commercial vehicles of up to 7.5 tons, the Nikkei reported.

Nissan will manufacture the NV200 strategic vehicle in Mexico, India, Indonesia and three other locations to realise a high global supply capacity.

The NV200 has been selected as New York City’s next-generation taxicab. It will be rolled out in October 2013 with Nissan the exclusive supplier for the roughly 13,000-strong fleet of yellow cabs for 10 years.
