Mitsubishi Motors president Osamu Masuko said MMC would start jointly with the Thai government fleet testing of its i-MiEV electric vehicle in the country from August.
The Japanese automaker is expected to judge whether it is possible to manufacture the EV at the automaker’s Thai plant in the future through the testing, including charging infrastructure for the vehicle as well as its marketability and acceptability in the country, Kyodo News reported.
Thailand is a major manufacturing base for Mitsubishi Motors, and the Japanese automaker is seeking to make the country its second-largest hub for vehicle exports after Japan.
Two companies in Thailand, including the state-owned utility Metropolitan Electricity Authority, will join the testing to help the automaker research the power supply structure there. The testing is expected to last six months to one year, the automaker said.
Mitsubishi and the Thai government agreed in 2010 to start the testing as part of efforts to introduce the i-MiEV in the country.
