Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has launched a new Galant Fortis sedan in Japan with two-litre petrol engine and the choice of two- or four-wheel drive and three trim packages.

The Galant Fortis, the first new sedan introduced by the company in Japan in seven years, is already on sale in North America as the 2008 Lancer sedan, also with two-litre petrol engine, and will be introduced to Europe at next month’s Frankfurt motor show. Versions sold here will have 1.5- or 1.8-litre petrol engines and a two-litre diesel while a new Evolution super sports model is also planned, with a new twin-clutch automatic gearbox.

Mitsubishi said the Galant Fortis hads been developed to a product concept that called for “a global sporty sedan that delivers high and well-balanced levels of safety, comfort and environmental performance.”

The Japanese-specification model’s two-litre DOHC MIVEC aluminium block engine has a four-star rating for emission levels 75% below those required by Japan’s 2005 standards, mated to Mitsubishi’s own ‘Invecs-III’ six-speed sport mode CVT automatic transmission. Japanese buyers can order paddle shifters that allow the driver to shift gears without taking hands off the steering wheel and a Rockford Fosgate premium sound system.

Standard on all models is Mitsubishi Motors ‘cocochi-interior’ (a pun on the Japanese word for ‘cozy’) that includes a deodorising clean air filter and odour-absorbing head lining.
