Japan’s powerful economy, trade and industry ministry will work with 10 automakers on an automotive electronics operating system (OS).

The Yomiuri Shimbum website, citing a ministry source, said the decision would be announced this week and noted that European auto makers are also developing a commmon OS for automotive electronics.
Japanese companies, which have been developing their own operating systems separately, would begin joint development of an OS, aiming to create a global standard in this field, the report said.
The ministry would commission development by JasPar – Japan Automotive Software Platform Architecture – a joint venture of automakers and suppliers, including Toyota, Nissan Motor, Honda R&D, Denso and Toshiba.
The paper said the ministry plans to seek more than JPY1bn in government funding, have a prototype OS completed in fiscal 2009 and market it in five to 10 years.
