Mazda Motor Corporation built its first production redesigned MX-5/Miata on May 17 at the sole source plant – Ujina No.1 (U1) near its global headquarters in Hiroshima, Japan.
The new roadster is the first new model to be mass-produced at Mazda’s U1 plant, since the re-start of paint shop operations at the end of April following a fire.
Job One was a Limited model destined for North America, painted Velocity red with red leather interior, and fitted with a 16-valve, two-litre four-cylinder, 170-hp engine and six-speed manual transmission.
In April 2005, the Guinness World Book of Records officially recertified the MX-5 as the best-selling two-seat sports car ever.
When production of the second-generation model came to an end in December 2004, 718,954 vehicles had been built.
