In a move that parallels one third owner Ford’s recent recalls of newly redesigned models, Mazda Motor is to recall 51,264 Demio compact cars [the model known as the Mazda 2 abroad]. It will fix a switch connected to the indicator lights, according to Bloomberg News.

The report said company spokesman Hideo Azuma declined to say how much the recall would cost. The models to be fixed were produced between June 19, 2002 and March 10, 2003, Azuma said. There were no accidents reported from the fault, he added.

According to Bloomberg News, Mazda released the Demio in August last year, part of its plan to build on its return to profit in the year ended March 2002.

The car, which shares a platform with Ford’s Fiesta model, has been beating its 7,000 unit sales target since the company started offering DVD-based navigation systems with the car to make it more competitive against best sellers such as Honda’s Fit [Jazz] compact and Nissan’s Cube compact, Bloomberg News said.
