Mazda Motor Corporation has confirmed earlier media reports it will “secure” production volume at its Ujina No.1 Plant (U1) through making use of the paint shop of Ujina No.2 Plant (U2) in Hiroshima to minimize the impact by the fire that broke out at U1 on December 15th. Mazda will resume production of the Demio (2 in export markets) at U1 on January 6 by using the U2 Paint Shop and “study” restarting operations sequentially for other models such as the Verisa and MPV. Mazda will maintain production volume through increasing the production speed at U2 and the Hofu plants.

Mazda has been cleaning up the damaged parts of the building and equipment until now. Full restoration of the U1 paint shop will begin on December 25 with large cranes being brought in to dismantle damaged equipment.

The cost of the damage has been set at about 2.7 billion yen – including direct losses from the fire in buildings, equipment, and part-built cars, but excluding the cost of dismantling and refurbishment.
