Mazda has launched a training programme for employees of the new Mazda Motor Manufacturing de Mexico (MMMdM) plant currently under construction.

An opening ceremony was held at the automaker’s headquarters in Hiroshima on Thursday (7 June) with the first group, 12 workers who will manage production departments at the Mexican facility, taking part.

The course began with a tour of the company museum and classes on health and safety. While in Japan the participants will study manufacturing methods, quality control standards, and leadership skills through hands-on, practical training. On the weekends, trainees will participate in various events in order to get to know other employees and people from the local community.

Mazda plans to host about 180 workers from Mexico, divided into several groups, through to the end of fiscal 2014. These trainees will take up engineering, supervisory and managerial positions at MMMdM.

Some will participate in six-week Japanese language and culture programmes organized by the country’s overseas human resources and industry development association prior to starting training at Mazda HQ.

Mazda started sales in Mexico in October 2005 In the fiscal year to 31 March, it sold about 30,000 units, posting record-high sales volume and market share.

Ground for the new plant was broken last October. By the end of this year, the buildings, including roofs and exterior walls, will be completed and preparations for the start of operations by the end of March 2014 are “progressing smoothly”, the automaker said in a statement.
