Mazda is marking 40(!) years of rotary engine vehicle sales with a 200-unit limited edition model RX-8 sold in Japan.

Mazda’s first rotary was the 1967 Cosmo Sport (sold as the 110S overseas), followed by the Familia Rotary Coupe (known as the R100 and RX-2 overseas), the Savanna (RX-3), RX-7, and Eunos Cosmo.

Mazda is working on technical improvements in fuel economy and environmental performance for its rotary engines and also intends to advance the potential of the hydrogen rotary engine as part of its long-term vision for technology development announced in March 2007.
