Japanese carmakers are recalling over three million cars globally over a defect in passenger airbags.
Toyota, which is recalling 1.73m cars, said the affected vehicles are equipped with front passenger airbag inflators which could have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant wafers. “Improperly manufactured propellant wafers could cause the inflator to rupture and the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally in the event of a crash,” the company said.

Honda is recalling 1.13m cars, while 480,000 of Nissan’s and 45,000 Mazda cars are affected.
The firms said the defective part was supplied by parts maker Takata Corp.
Toyota said that there were five separate incidents of the airbag inflator being ruptured and no injuries in any of the incidents.
Toyota said that the vehicles involved include certain Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia, and Tundra, and Lexus SC 430 models manufactured from 2001–2003.
