Sales of new vehicles in Japan, excluding mini-vehicles, increased by 32% to 1,720,691 units in the first half of 2010, according to data released by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA).

This was the first rise in first-half sales in five years, although it compares with very depressed year-earlier levels.

Passenger car sales rose by 35% to 1,566,598 units; while truck sales rose by 7.6% to 146,508 units; and bus sales 5.1% to 7,585 units.

Separately, the Japan Mini-Vehicle Association released data showing first-half sales of vehicles with engine displacements of up to 660cc rising by 6% to 936,137 units.
