Isuzu Motors plans to establish a wholly owned subsidiary in Chennai, India, in August to market pickup trucks produced at its main assembly base in Thailand but will eventually produce them in India, possibly by 2016.

Isuzu Motors India will start marketing the pickup trucks by the end of this year, Kyodo News reported. It has set an initial sales goal of 1,500 trucks for the first year but hopes to build that to 100,000 a year after local production begins.

Isuzu noted there is no large demand for pickup trucks in India at present but expected market demand to “undergo major changes down the line in tandem with its road infrastructure buildup and increases in the Indian people’s income”.
