Honda Motor on Thursday broke ground for its new car plant in Saitama Prefecture.

The facility, due to start operations in 2010 with an annual output capacity of some 200,000 vehicles, will be characterised by eco-friendly features, as will Honda’s nearby engine plant which is now under construction and slated to begin operations a year before, the automaker said in a press release cited by Kyodo News.

The two plants will work on resource and energy recycling and the new car factory will have its rooftop and surrounding area filled with vegetation, the news agency reported, citing Honda’s statement.

The car plant will be located in Yorii, Saitama Prefecture, and the engine plant will be two kilometres away in the town of Ogawa in the same prefecture.

The Yorii factory will supplement Honda’s manufacturing facilities in Saitama that include an existing car manufacturing plant in the city of Sayama, the report added.
