Daihatsu Motor’s subsidiary’s new factory in Oita Prefecture has started full production, with a planned annual output of 120,000 vehicles, according to Kyodo News.

Daihatsu Motor took the wraps off two new Hijet commercial vehicle models at a ceremony at the factory of its wholly owned subsidiary, Daihatsu Auto Body Co. The plant in the city of Nakatsu has an annual output capacity of 150,000 units, the automaker said.

Daihatsu Auto Body closed an obsolete factory in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, in late November, completing the Nakatsu factory with an investment of 40 billion yen. The subsidiary also moved its head office to Nakatsu.

The new plant has a floor space of 80,000 square metres, on total premises of 1.3 million square metres. The plant has the potential to boost annual output to 250,000 units.

The Daihatsu group aims to cut back on production costs by 30% by giving production lines the capability to assemble a wide range of vehicle models.
