The companies developed the model jointly, branding it Hijet (Daihatsu), Sambar (Subaru) and Pixis (Toyota). All three have virtually identical styling.

The two-seat pickup is powered by a 658cc, DOHC, I3 petrol engine with five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions plus either rear wheel- or all-wheel-drive. The 2WD manual weighs 742kg and achieves fuel economy of 6.1 l/100km.

Daihatsu priced the Hijet at US$10,754 for the 2WD manual to $14,715 for the 4WD automatic.
