Sales of new motor vehicles in Japan, excluding minivehicles with engines of up to 660 cc, fell 5.9% in August from the year before to 232,225 units, marking the 14th straight monthly fall, an industry body said on Friday.
The August sales fall was led by a 7.2% decline in passenger car sales to 188,934 units and an 11.4% drop in bus sales to 1,438 units, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said, according to Kyodo News.
Sales of small passenger cars with an engine capacity between 661 cc and 2000 cc fell 10.9% to 115,749 units. Sales of larger passenger cars dipped 0.5% to 73,185 units. But sales of trucks edged up 0.3% to 41,853 units for the 17th straight month of growth.
Domestic sales decreased at three of the five biggest Japanese automakers in the reporting month, with Honda suffering the most, Kyodo News noted.
Honda saw its sales plunge 21.0% to 26,147 units, and Nissan Motor saw a 20.1% dive to 37,938 units. Sales fell 7.2% to 15,375 units at Mazda.

By GlobalDataToyota saw a 0.5% gain to 99,696 units. Sales of its Lexus luxury cars came to 2,038 units in August, up from the previous month’s 1,468 units.
Mitsubishi Motors also posted increased sales, with a 9.8% rise to 4,337 units, Kyodo News added.
