Nissan’s Leaf electric vehicle has won Car of the Year Japan for 2011-2012 at the Tokyo motor show.

Nissan has sold around 20,000 of the Leaf, i’s first mass-produced electric car, around the world since launch a year ago.

This is the second award in Japan for the car. Last month it won the RJC Car of the Year award from the Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan.

The latest award, announced during the the weekend, is given to the best passenger car selected from all vehicles marketed in Japan between 1 November of the previous year and 30 September of the current year.

The award committee, which is made up of about 60 motoring writers from motor magazines and media organizations, said the Leaf was extremely practical and had helped popularise electric vehicles.

The experts also selected Mercedes-Benz Japan’s C-class sedan/station wagon as Import Car of the Year.
