BMW will hike capacity at its Shenyang factory in China by 45% over the next few months to build as many as 44,000 cars a year.
BMW sales and marketing chief Stefan Krause told Reuters at a press conference in Japan that the automaker would aim to build on volume growth in China this year after a 37% rise in 2007 to more than 61,000 cars, Reuters reported.
Its venture with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings builds 3- and 5-series models in the northern city of Shenyang, with current annual capacity of 30,000.
Reuters noted that Chinese media have said the venture is building a second plant capable of making 20,000 cars per year while BMW had said repeatedly that details of the expansion plans had yet to be finalised.
