Japanese vehicle production in August rose 20.8% year on year to 690,689 units for the 10th successive monthly increase, due to last-minute demand for subsidised eco-friendly vehicles and a plunge last year amid the global financial crisis, an industry body said on Thursday.

But the production level for the month remained around 10% less than the pre-financial crisis level of 771,489 units in August 2008, Kyodo News reported.

An official at the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) was also wary over an expected drop in domestic demand following the ending of the government subsidy programme on 8 September.

Production of passenger cars grew 20.4% to 594,564 units, while that of trucks increased 25.3% to 89,858 units, according to the association. Bus production decreased 2.3% to 6,267. Japan’s auto exports rose 22.5% to 337,163 units, marking the eighth straight month of increases, the association said.

By region, exports to Latin America surged 74.6% to 31,934 units, while those to the Middle East increased 59.9% to 41,382. Exports to North America, the main destination for Japanese-made vehicles, decreased 0.4% to 113,295 – the first downturn in eight months.
