Strikes by truck drivers who deliver Fiat cars are causing hundreds of new models to pile up at factory lots around Italy, Fiat said on Tuesday, warning it could have to halt production at some facilities, according to Reuters.
The news agency reported that Fiat said in a statement that a disagreement between truck drivers and their sub-contractors had halted deliveries from five of its factories — which account for around three-quarters of its production — for as much as a week.
Reuters noted that strikes crippled Fiat last year with thousands of workers taking to the streets, staging sit-ins and blocking airports and government buildings, in protest at the lay-off of more than 8,000 workers, particularly from Italy’s poorer south.
According to Reuters, Fiat said it did not know when the truck driver strike, over which it has no negotiating power, would end. It has asked for the truckers to arrange for a minimum level of daily deliveries to avoid “further economic damages to the company.”
