Provisional data released by Italy’s automotive trade body ANFIA shows that the Italian car market posted a year-on-year decline of 15.3% in December.
The monthly decline is the biggest since March and it leaves the car market for the year at 1.75m units, 10.9% down on the previous year.
The Italian car market has weakened in recent months as concerns over its sovereign debt, fiscal adjustment and economic outlook have deepened.
“The Italian car market is looking desperately weak,” says LMC Automotive analyst Jonathan Poskitt. “Any turnaround looks some way away.”
Fiat-Chrysler Group car sales in Italy for 2011 were off 13.5% at 515,579 units.
